The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has rehabilitated the Kakamega, Kitale, and Migori airstrips to reduce congestion at the Kisumu International Airport.
KAA Managing Director Alex Gitari noted that the interconnectivity of domestic airports will drive business and offer convenient travel options.
“We are proud to support this development and meet the demand for flights in the region,” he said.
Further, he noted that plans were underway to expand Kabunde Airstrip in Homabay, reflecting the recovery and growth of domestic travel.
“Plans are in place to expand the runway at Kabunde Airstrip. We’re also in the final stages of scoping and designing the airstrip’s terminal building,” he said.
Lichota Airstrip in Migori received Kes310 million in upgrades, and Kakamega and Kitale Airstrips received Kes174 million and Kes221 million, respectively.
The airports in Kakamega and Migori will significantly promote tourism, and the Kitale facility is essential for transporting horticultural goods.
Expanding the Kakamega Airstrip will allow larger aircraft to land at the facility.
