According to a new report, the telecommunication Company Safaricom’s workforce increased by 675 in the full year ending March 2023, attributed to Ethiopia’s entry.

The telco reports in its 2023 annual report that during the same period this year, the number of employees increased from 6,616 to 5,941 from March 2022's 5,941 employees.

In October of last year, Safaricom Ethiopia launched its telecom services there, creating a new market for Safaricom Kenya.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Safaricom Peter Ndegwa attended the occasion, which took place in Addis Abeba, the capital of Ethiopia.

After entering the market there, it increased its headcount by hiring new employees from the Horn of Africa nation.

“A total workforce complement of 6,616, including Safaricom Ethiopia staff at 909, of which 81% is local talent,” the firm says in its annual report.

Additional staff increased the telco’s employee costs from Sh22.6 billion to Sh28.3 billion.
