A Kisumu court sentenced a man to 15 years in prison on Friday after finding him guilty of raping a 92-year-old grandmother at Ofunyu village in September of last year.

In his ruling, Senior Principal Magistrate Robert Owanda of the Winam Law Courts stated that witness testimony provided during the trial demonstrated that the accused, Alex Okumu Ooyi, alias Jagor, carried out the horrific deed.

By the Sexual Offenses Act, the accused was charged with two counts of rape and indecent assault. The accused forcefully broke into grandmother Keziah Osir's home at 11 p.m. on the relevant day, September 17, 2023, and sexually assaulted her, according to testimony given to the court.

Seven witnesses, including DNA analysis specialists from the government chemist who tested the accused person's underwear and the blood-stained blankets from the scene, testified in the case, according to Magistrate Owanda.

The judge pointed out that the accused's DNA profile, which included vaginal swaps and blood stains, matched the grandmother's female DNA profile, connecting him to the crime.

The accused requested leniency from the court in mitigation, claiming he was a first-time offender. However, the court dismissed this request, stating that the offense was severe and required a harsh deterrent punishment.

The accused has fourteen days to contest the detention.
