Six people have lost their lives in Durban South Africa following a mass shooting on Friday night over a missing Identity Card(ID).

Following the incident, police have launched a ‘massive manhunt’ for at least four gunmen involved in the shooting.

According to police spokesman Robert Netshiunda, the suspects stormed into a house in a township near Durban and killed four people, two inside the main building, one in a backroom and another near an outside toilet.

Two more people were shot dead inside a shack a few metres away and a third was injured.

Further, preliminary investigations revealed the suspected ringleader demanded his identity document from the victims before shooting them.

“It is believed that he was implicated and is wanted by police for another murder in which he allegedly dropped his identity document accidentally,” Netshiunda said.

According to reports, the shooter thought one of the victims had the ID, Netshiunda continued.

South Africa, which has one of the worst murder rates in the world, is prone to mass shootings.

The Democratic Alliance (DA), the largest opposition party in South Africa, claimed that the most recent episode was a glaring example of the "total disregard" that criminals have for the nation's law enforcement.
