The Ministry of Education intends to change the KCSE examinations' grading structure to reflect learners' dominant aptitudes and interests.
On Monday, Dr. Belio Kipsang, Principal Secretary for Basic Education, stated that the new grading system will consider learners' reading and numeracy abilities.
According to the PS, the system will allow learners' overall grading to include the strongest five subjects rather than rating them across subject clusters, as has been the case since the commencement of the 8-4-4 education system.

Kipsang remarked at a briefing to members of the National Assembly's Departmental Committee on Education in Mombasa on the progress of the presidential working party on education reforms' (PWPER) proposals.
Dr. Kipsang spoke on behalf of Education Cabinet Secretary for Education Ezekiel Machogu, informing the committee of the status and ideas that will put PWPER's recommendations into action.
The working party's report includes assessment recommendations and comparing the KCSE grading system to worldwide norms.
According to PS Kipsang, grading in any national education system is for certification rather than placement of pupils in higher education.
According to him, the merger of certification and placement in the KCSE grade structure has disadvantaged many kids with diverse abilities and interests.
He claims that Literacy and numeracy ability will be considered in future grades.
On the other hand, students in the remaining 8-4-4 cohort will be judged based on their performance in five disciplines and their grades in Mathematics and either English or Kiswahili, according to Kipsang.
