On Monday, October 9, security officers from the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) apprehended an Indonesian national at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on suspicion of engaging in wildlife trafficking.

Upon inspection, the foreigner was found to be in possession of 38.4 kilograms of ivory valued at Ksh10 million.

The arrest came after KAA officials at JKIA Terminal 1 raised an alarm during a standard passenger screening procedure at the airport.

According to KAA report, “Kenyan authorities have thwarted a significant wildlife trafficking attempt at JKIA,”

Following this event at JKIA, there was a subsequent arrest of two individuals in Kibwezi, Machakos County, by investigators from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations. The suspects were found in possession of animal trophies.

As per the police reports, the pair, originally from Kajiado County, were involved in trafficking seven pieces of ivory weighing 7 kilograms, valued at Ksh1 million.
