A couple from Rongai in Nakuru County is counting their losses when thieves ambushed them and took their money after they had just withdrawn money from a bank.
Joy Chebii and her husband Benson Langat had just withdrawn Ksh.699,000 from a bank in Nakuru's CBD to acquire construction supplies for their Rongai rental houses.
Chebii claims that after withdrawing, they proceeded to a local eatery for lunch before riding a matatu back home, alighting at Sobea junction, and then taking a boda boda.
“We had just gone some distance when a Landcruiser Prado overtook us and blocked us before gun-toting men came out and ordered us to surrender the money or they shoot us, they took my handbag and whisked away my husband,” she narrated.
Langat claimed he was told not to identify anyone in the vehicle since the robbers grabbed all the money and left him with only Ksh.2,000 in a different pocket before dumping him on the roadside while wrapped in a sack.
The incident was reported to the Menengai police station. Rongai OCPD Wilberforce Sicharani has since cautioned the public to avoid carrying big sums of money in bulk or utilizing bags.
