Two families in Kericho County are demanding justice after two of their kin were brutally killed by a gang.
Davis Kiprono Barongei, 24, and his cousin Kevin Kiprotich, 25, were returning from the Sigowet Trade Center at 11:30 p.m. when they were ambushed by unknown attackers. Barongei was hit on the head with a machete and left for dead on the highway, while Kiprotich was carried nine km away before being savagely attacked by the intruders; he later died from his injuries at a Kericho Nursing Home.
Barongei's father, Francis Taitta Birgen, described the horrific circumstances that resulted in the deaths of his son and nephew.
"What should have been a stroll home turned into a nightmare as the murderous gang descended upon them along the Sigowet-Chepkemel-Soko Huru road, robbing them after inflicting fatal wounds," he said.
Birgen stated that they have yet to determine the motives behind the murders.
"We don't know if the assassins were targeting their phones and money or for another reason. We hope the inquiry leads to the arrest of the perpetrators so that we may get answers and justice," he stated.
The incident was reported to Sondu Police Station under OB 13/11/05/24, however over a week later, no suspects have been detained.
Richard Birgen, the deceased's uncle, feels that if police had been stationed at Sigowet Police Station, the young guys could still be alive today.
Despite being gazetted in the 1980s, no policemen have ever been assigned to the police station.
The nearest police station is at Sondu, while the Administration Police Station is in Chepkemel.
