On Wednesday, Bramwel Simiyu, the Nairobi County El Nino taskforce chair, reaffirmed his commitment to mitigating the effects of the upcoming El Nino rains.

He expressed confidence in the County's preparedness in an interview with NTV, noting the deployment of crucial resources like excavators and trucks.

Simiyu said, "As a department, we aim to get motorboats and inflatable rafts within the next week to enable us to access inundated areas.

"The first and most important measure is the cleaning and draining of our drainages to avoid flooding. The recruitment of 3,500 environmental officers to clean and unclog the drainages goes a long way to ensure our preparedness for the El Nino rains," Sakaja said while unveiling the County's plan on Monday, September 11.

The governor also instructed the construction sector's directorate to identify structures at risk of flooding and prepare quick evacuations in such locations.

Additionally, he underscored the County's commitment to boosting public safety by lowering the ambulance response time to just nine minutes.

The rainy season is anticipated to start in the third and fourth weeks of this month, and above-average rainfall is forecast for most of the nation.

Notably, the most recent prognosis from the meteorological service indicates that all counties, except Narok, Kajiado, Samburu, and Turkana, are projected to see above-average rainfall this month.

In flood-prone locations, the increased rainfall may impact public safety, agriculture, health, and the environment.
