Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza requests Senate involvement to mediate the growing conflict with Meru county assembly members.

In a letter to Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, Kawira stated that she reconciled with the MCAs following last year's failed impeachment attempt and that they had been working cordially until lately when gaps appeared.

She added that because she was elected to the county's top position on an independent ticket, she does not necessarily have any MCAs affiliated with her in the Assembly pursuing the administration's priorities.

The Governor asserted that the Assembly majority and minority parties have now met and agreed to withdraw their support for her and push for a second removal attempt.

In a letter, she wrote, "I have been relying on the majority party (UDA Party) in the Assembly to move the executive agendas in the Assembly." "On September 23, 2023, the UDA Party called a meeting through its majority leader, Hon. Evans Mawira, and at the end of the meeting, they addressed members of the press by indicating that they have withdrawn their support for the Governor and that they will soon bring a motion to impeach me 'for incompetence,'" wrote Kawira in the letter.

"Thereafter, the DEP Party (the minority party in Meru's County Assembly) called a meeting on September 29, 2023, and at the end of the meeting addressed the press, indicating that the party has withdrawn its support for the Governor," she added.

"Since that day, all members of the County Assembly who have directly expressed their support for my government have been harassed by either the Minority Whip of the Assembly or the Majority Whip of the Assembly," she continued. This has gotten so bad that several members of the House's sectoral committees have been removed."

Kawira also blamed Senator Murungi Kathuri and Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi for her problems, alleging they’re behind attempts to sabotage her leadership, including even politically capturing her deputy.

She now wants the Senate standing committee on devolution to intervene and arbitrate the dispute to settle apparent disagreements between herself and the MCAs.

"My Deputy Governor has been besieged by the Meru County Senator, Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Agriculture, and Members of Parliament, all of whom are Meru County residents." "They've been holding press conferences and beating the war drums about impeaching me for 'incompetence,'" she claims.

"My deputy governor has gone so far as to call members of the County Assembly who have openly come to support my government and entice them to support him instead to have me removed." I am ready and willing to present evidence at the appropriate time."
