Flooding and landslides in Kenya's coastal region have caused delays in cargo delivery to and from the port city of Mombasa.

Heavy rains and flash floods have inundated towns across East Africa, displacing hundreds of thousands of people.

The death toll from the flooding in Kenya is at least 46, and it is expected to grow.

Flooding and a landslide on the railway route connecting Nairobi and Mombasa have prompted Kenya Railways to suspend all-cargo services, according to a statement. The railway also transports merchandise to Rwanda, Uganda, and South Sudan.

Kenya Railways has stated that limited passenger services will continue.

According to data from Kenya's National Bureau of Statistics, its standard gauge railway transported 6 million metric tonnes of cargo last year, up from 5.4 million the previous year.
