According to Reuters, the son of Dawoud Shehab, spokesman for Hamas-aligned Islamic Jihad, was among the deceased.

A physician said that dozens of individuals were murdered or injured at the Shehab family home and neighboring structures.

"We believe the number of dead people under the rubble is huge but there is no way to remove the rubble and recover them because of the intensity of Israeli fire," he added in a telephone interview.

Medics in Deir al-Balah, central Gaza, said 12 Palestinians were killed and dozens were injured, while an Israeli air attack on a house in Rafah, south Gaza, killed at least four individuals.

People rushed to the building to help those trapped beneath the rubble. According to Mahmoud Jarbou, who lives close by, the sound of the explosion was "as powerful as an earthquake."

According to the Israeli government, it operates targeting militant targets and takes extreme precautions to avoid striking civilians.

Residents in Khan Younis, in southern Gaza, reported hearing Israeli planes and tanks bombing and shelling, as well as the sound of rocket-propelled grenades fired by Hamas.

The Israeli military said an air raid on Khan Younis killed seven militants and discovered rocket manufacturing parts and three subterranean shafts near a school used as a refuge.
