On Thursday, a form two student from Kanga-Onditi secondary school drowned while swimming in the Migori River.

The 17-year-old boy drowned while swimming with two other classmates around 3 p.m.

According to one of the survivors, Rolling Ouma, the deceased was overwhelmed by the water.

Ouma stated that he attempted to save him but that his efforts were futile because he was also tired of swimming in the water for a long time.

Cleophas Ogolla, the deceased's father, said he was at work when he received a distress call from a village elder informing him of his son's death.

Ogolla stated that they could not retrieve the body due to the high water volume in the river and thus requested government assistance.

He stated that until the body is recovered, family members will have to camp along the river.

Residents have expressed their concern about the river's high number of drownings, urging the government to take the necessary precautions to prevent such tragedies.

Samwel Okombo, a village elder in the region, stated that they have been losing people every time the water level in the Migori River rises and that there is a need to put measures in place to prevent such deaths.

The residents also want the government to construct a footbridge across the Migori River to help them cross it.
