Several people have been arrested in Nyeri Town and its surroundings as part of a crackdown on followers of the Mungiki sect.

This comes after Nyeri County Police Commissioner Pius Murugu declared a planned gathering at the Kabiru-Ini Grounds unlawful, which was to be attended by a section of Mount Kenya leaders.

Security officers stationed along the Nyeri-Nairobi, Nyeri-Nyahururu, and Nyeri-Nanyuki Highways built security checks to prevent supporters of the former Mungiki leader from reaching the planned meeting at the sites.

More police officers were stationed at the site of the prohibited gathering, while others patrolled Nyeri town and its vicinity.

The meeting was canceled, and Njenga's followers were arrested when Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua warned of the emergence of the outlawed Mungiki cult in his Nyeri neighborhood.
