Kenyans who want to celebrate the end of the year with a fireworks show are advised to get permits from the State Department of Mining's Inspector of Explosives.

The Mining Department stressed the significance of enforcing strict laws and control measures on the sale, storage, and use of fireworks in a statement on X on Saturday.

The department said that Kenyans must strictly follow the rules outlined in the Explosives Act to protect people and property.

"It has become a tradition in towns and cities that every New Year's Eve is marked by spectacular display of fireworks. The thrill and excitement of having the night skies lit by the explosion of fire and dazzling lights are an experience for fireworks enthusiasts," said the Mining Department.

"Protection of lives and property calls for strict regulations and control of sale, storage, and fireworks usage as stipulated under the Explosives Act. Persons intending to stage fireworks must get a permit from the Inspector of Explosives under the SDM.

The Mining Department also stated that even with the licenses for the fireworks, Kenyans still need to make sure that department officers are present at the location of the eye-catching displays.

"Further, Officers from the State Department should be notified and be present during fireworks displays," said the Mining Department, which warned retailers against selling fireworks to children since it is illegal.
