According to the BBC, Marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum will be buried on 24 February in his hometown of Chepkorio in northwest Kenya.

Kiptum was killed along with his coach Gervais Hakizimana, in a horrific road accident on Sunday at 11 pm.

According to police, the tragic road crash occurred in the Kaptagat area along the Elgeyo Marakwet-Ravine road, where Kiptum and Hakizimana died on the spot due to the impact of the self-involved accident.

The Sports ministry is expected to take charge of the burial in consultation with the family.

Sports cabinet secretary Ababu Namwamba said Kiptum was a national hero who “will be honoured in death as he was in life.”

Kenya’s parliament held a minute’s silence in honor of Kiptum on Tuesday.

Further, the Cabinet on Wednesday honoured the late marathon world record-holder.

According to State House spokesperson Hussein Mohamed, the Cabinet, in a meeting chaired by President William Ruto, held a minute of silence in remembrance of the late Kiptum and his Rwandan coach, Gervais Hakizimana.

"Cabinet meeting underway at State House Nairobi, with President William Ruto leading Cabinet secretaries in honoring the late marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum and his coach, Gervais Hakizimana, by observing a one-minute silence," said Mohamed in a statement X.

A burial date for his coach, who was a Rwandan national, is yet to be set.
