The government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo was dissolved on Tuesday as a result of the resignation of Prime Minister Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde, the presidency announced in a statement.

Eight days after his nomination as national deputy was approved, the prime minister submitted his resignation to President Felix Tshisekedi. He will now become a member of the assembly in parliament.

"The resignation has been accepted. However, the president has asked (Lukonde's) government to continue handling current affairs" until a new government is formed, the presidency said in another statement later on Tuesday.

The reasons behind Lukonde's resignation were not mentioned.

In February 2021, the mineral-rich nation of central Africa appointed Lukonde as its premier.

Tshisekedi appointed a representative to find a majority coalition in the National Assembly after winning reelection in December to form the next government.
