The Ministry of Lands has notified residents of six Government Estates in Nairobi's Eastlands to vacate so they can be redeveloped under the Affordable Housing Programme (AHP).
According to an advisory issued by Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga, the affected estates are Jogoo Road Phases I and II, Jamaa, Mbotela, Ahero, and Mawenzi Gardens.
After paying any outstanding rent arrears, energy bills, and service costs, residents have been asked to depart their homes by April 30, 2024.

"As you are aware, the Government is implementing the Affordable Housing Program (AHP), which is part of the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA). Pursuant to this, several old estates have been identified for redevelopment in order to increase rental stock, avail houses for sale to citizens at affordable rates, and create job opportunities for the youth,"
"To pave way for their redevelopment, there is need to vacate all tenants residing in these Government estates immediately," reads the notice in part.
According to the announcement, individuals displaced from these estates will be prioritized in purchasing or renting a home after the reconstruction.
