South Rift region doctors staged protests in Nakuru town on Tuesday, announcing that they would not return to work until their demands were satisfied.

Leading the nonviolent protests, Dr. Stephen Omondi of the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU) for the South Rift Region demanded that the government execute the 2017 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and post interns to hospitals.

"These interns work in our hospitals as qualified medical professionals. He said they provide a third or so of the services our facilities offer.

Omondi rejected the revised intern salary proposals, claiming that the CBA, which still needs to be implemented, lists the agreed-upon salaries.

He declared, "This strike will continue if these interns aren't posted and paid as specified in the CBA."

He listed more of their demands, like medical insurance for physicians, and pleaded with the government to break the deadlock as soon as possible because patients in public hospitals still lack access to care.

Due to the ongoing doctor's strike, medical services have been paralyzed in public hospitals nationwide for 13 days. Talks between the Ministry of Health and KMPDU have not produced results.
