Senegal's Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, has announced the formation of a new government consisting of 25 ministers and five junior ministers.

President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, 44, was inaugurated on Tuesday. He accepted the government and named Sonko, a close supporter and prime minister. Faye followed Macky Sall, whose 12-year presidency saw a surge in widespread resentment.

The government will be keenly scrutinized after Faye made extreme campaign pledges, including abolishing the CFA franc, West Africa's shared currency. He has slightly backtracked on that promise, but this week, the former tax inspector pledged an examination of the oil, gas, and mining industries.

Cheikh Diba has been appointed finance minister, among other vital appointments. Diba formerly served as the finance ministry's head of budget programming. Abdourahmane Sarr was appointed Economy Minister.

Birame Souleye Diop, who formerly served as vice president of Sonko and Faye's now-dissolved Pastef party, will lead the oil and energy ministry.

Two generals were appointed interior and defense ministries.
