The government has detailed its strategy for forming a 100-member National Steering Committee to engage Kenyan youth on governance and accountability issues.

Felix Koskei, Director of Public Service, announced that the committee will include members from diverse groups such as youth, civil society, religious organizations, professional bodies, business associations, academics, and student leaders. The committee will also feature majority and minority parliament leaders, the Council of Governors, and other key stakeholders.

“Each umbrella body is requested to formally nominate two representatives of either gender for consideration for appointment to the National Steering Committee (NSC). The nominations should be addressed to the Executive Office of the President, Harambee House,” the statement read.

Nominations are to be received by the Executive Office of the President on or before July 7, 2024.

Koskei stated that the committee will develop the structure, methods, agenda, and deadlines for a national discourse addressing youth concerns. Key topics include employment, tax policy, national debt, representation and accountability, anti-corruption measures, and other relevant issues.

President William Ruto will preside over the committee's inaugural meeting to determine leadership. The forum will operate independently across Kenya’s 47 counties, using a participatory approach in each ward.

“In keeping with our national values and principles of governance on public participation, every Kenyan and all stakeholders will have an opportunity to present their proposals on the agenda items in person, remotely, individually, or as groups,” the statement read.

“The NSC will also provide a framework and mechanism for engaging with political leaders in a bipartisan manner.”
