Activist Boniface Mwangi and four others have been released on a cash bail of Ksh. 20,000 each. The Milimani court rejected a request from investigating officers to detain the group for 21 days and instead scheduled a mention date within that period.
The five were arrested on Thursday during a demonstration in Nairobi's Central Business District (CBD) held in memory of youths killed during the June 25th invasion of parliament. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had sought to detain the group, citing ongoing investigations into allegations of computer misuse and cybercrime, unlawful assembly, and incitement.
The court was informed that these offences are still under investigation. Police claimed that Mwangi and the others were distributing t-shirts and placards with inciteful messages. Additionally, investigators argued that the group disrupted public order by blocking roads with a coffin and seven white crosses bearing names.
