Nigeria has received 10,000 doses of the Mpox vaccine from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), marking the country's first batch amid confirmed disease cases.

To date, Nigeria has recorded 40 Mpox cases, all of which have been non-fatal.

Muyi Aina, the Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), emphasized the donation's importance and described it as a significant milestone for Nigeria.

Aina noted that the global supply of the Mpox vaccine is limited, with Nigeria receiving 10,000 of the approximately 200,000 doses available worldwide.

According to a statement from USAID, the Nigerian government has identified five priority states for vaccine distribution, including Bayelsa, Edo, Cross River, and Lagos. However, the NPHCDA has not yet announced the timeline for distribution or the specific groups that will be prioritized for vaccination.

During the handover ceremony, U.S. Ambassador Richard Mills urged the Nigerian government to continue mobilizing domestic resources to secure additional vaccines to effectively fight Mpox.
