A 12-year-old boy has sustained severe burns after a battery exploded, igniting a fire that destroyed eight rental homes at God Jope Trading Center, Lambwe West, in Homa Bay County.
The boy, who suffered severe burns on his left hand while attempting to disconnect the battery, was rushed to Ogongo Health Center for treatment.
Fredrick Onyango Odero, the Acting Chief of Lambwe West, explained that the battery, charged by a solar panel, exploded during disconnection, triggering the fire.

Neighbors acted quickly to rescue the boy and transport him to the hospital, but unfortunately, his home and eight others, built with Mabati (corrugated iron), were engulfed by the flames.
The fire destroyed all household possessions in the affected homes, leaving at least ten families homeless and forced to spend the night without shelter.
