The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has criticized the Kenya Kwanza government for neglecting intern doctors by failing to honor the 2017 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
KMPDU Secretary-General Dr. Davji Atellah expressed deep concern following the death of intern doctor Dr. Francis Njuki, who reportedly died by suicide after working without pay since August 2024 at Thika Level 5 Hospital.
This marks the second such tragedy in two months, following the September death of Dr. Desree Moraa under similar circumstances.

Dr. Atellah revealed that in addition to these two deaths, five other interns had attempted suicide due to unpaid salaries and harsh working conditions. He stated, "How many more young doctors must we lose before the government acts?"
The union demanded immediate implementation of the 2017 CBA, warning of potential industrial action if their grievances remain unaddressed. Dr. Atellah emphasized that the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) program, a cornerstone of the government’s health agenda, cannot succeed without ensuring the welfare of healthcare workers.
KMPDU has scheduled a press conference on November 27 to announce its next steps. It cites the government’s failure to resolve the issue despite court orders issued over six months ago.
“This government cannot preach UHC while neglecting the very professionals who provide healthcare services,” said Dr. Atellah.
He stressed that the time for "empty promises" is over and urged authorities to prioritize the well-being of medical interns.
The union has warned that unless urgent action is taken, healthcare services in public hospitals could be significantly disrupted, leaving the government to choose between fulfilling its promises or facing a crisis in the healthcare sector.
