Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has praised President William Ruto for his efforts to foster national unity by engaging former President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, despite their previously strained relationships.
Speaking during the Jamhuri Day celebrations at Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi on Thursday, Kindiki commended Ruto for extending an olive branch to leaders across political, religious, and ethnic divides.
“We commend you for reaching out to the former Prime Minister for the establishment of a broad-based government and for engaging former President Uhuru Kenyatta to ensure that all stakeholders are involved in shaping the destiny of our country,” said Kindiki. “Your commitment to uniting the country will accelerate Kenya’s progress as we work together for the benefit of future generations.”
Earlier this week, President Ruto made a surprise visit to Kenyatta at his Gatundu home to discuss ways to promote national unity and address tribal divisions.
The meeting marked a significant turn in their relationship, which had been strained since Ruto served as deputy president under Kenyatta’s administration. Kenyatta had endorsed Odinga over Ruto in the 2022 presidential race, a decision that intensified tensions.
After losing the 2022 election to Ruto, Odinga challenged the results in court and later led anti-government protests in 2023. The demonstrations culminated in deadly clashes before the two leaders reconciled through the "broad-based government" initiative. This initiative also saw opposition-aligned politicians appointed to Ruto’s Cabinet.
President Ruto has since been advocating for Odinga's bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship, signaling further efforts to bridge political divides.
