Kisumu Senator Tom Ojienda has suggested that President William Ruto could select a running mate from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party as part of a coalition deal for the 2027 elections.
Speaking during an interview on *Daybreak*, Ojienda revealed that the ruling government and the opposition are considering a framework to guide the coalition's structure. He emphasized that ODM's support for Ruto's re-election bid could significantly impact the presidential race.
"ODM will back President Ruto for a second term. On February 28, 2025, he will assume the role of African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson and travel to Addis Ababa. Meanwhile, I will stay here with the SG. ODM will be a key player," said Ojienda.

He further hinted that the coalition agreement might include appointing a deputy president from ODM.
Ojienda also predicted that other political parties could join the coalition, mentioning Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka as a potential ally.
"Wiper is seeking partnerships. Don't be surprised if Kalonzo joins the government in a few months," he speculated.
However, Ojienda's remarks drew criticism from ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna, who asserted that the party's stance is determined by its leader, Raila Odinga.
Sifuna noted that Raila, who is preparing to take up the AUC chairmanship next month, has instructed ODM to maintain its independence. He criticized the ruling government's unpopularity due to its policies over the past two years, arguing that a coalition with ODM would not salvage its standing.
"If you want to understand the party's position on coalitions, listen to Raila Odinga. He has given specific directives: ODM must retain its identity and continue its quest for power. We won't dissolve our party," Sifuna stated.
Sifuna also highlighted ODM's commitment to fielding its candidates in every election over the past two decades, adding that members have the freedom to voice their opinions, but the party leader's decision is final.
The Secretary-General clarified that ODM has not entered into any formal agreement with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) for the 2027 elections.
"I haven’t signed any deal, and there is no agreement between ODM and UDA. Popularity matters, and even with leaders flocking to Ruto’s side, the elections won't be won without a solid base," Sifuna concluded.
