Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati has passed away at the age of 63.
Chebukati breathed his last on Thursday evening while receiving medical treatment. According to his son, Daniel, the former electoral commission chief passed away at his residence in Nairobi after spending a week in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Although he had been battling an undisclosed illness for some time, details regarding his health condition remain unclear.
A seasoned lawyer, Chebukati served as the IEBC Chairperson from 2017 until his retirement in January 2023. During his tenure, he oversaw Kenya’s 2017 and 2022 General Elections, including the historic 2017 presidential election re-run.
Notably, he became the first IEBC Chair to complete a full six-year constitutional term, leaving behind a legacy in Kenya’s electoral history.
