The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has expressed concern over recent comments by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua during a gathering in Meru County.
Gachagua had warned President William Ruto against visiting the region if Chief Justice Martha Koome were to be removed from office.
In response, NCIC Chairperson Dr. Samuel Kobia has formally written to Gachagua, highlighting the potential threat to national unity posed by his remarks. The commission emphasized that such statements could fuel ethnic divisions and create unnecessary tensions among communities in Kenya.
According to Dr. Kobia, Gachagua’s claims that the president is plotting to remove CJ Koome based on her ethnicity are misleading and could promote negative ethnic sentiments.
"Your statement warning the president against visiting Meru County if Chief Justice Martha Koome is removed is a direct violation of his constitutional role as a symbol of national unity," Dr. Kobia stated.
The NCIC has urged Gachagua to exercise caution in his public statements to avoid inciting ethnic tensions.
