Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i is reportedly encountering mounting political and legal hurdles as he weighs a potential 2027 presidential run under the Jubilee Party. According to sources, influential figures within the ruling Kenya Kwanza Alliance are actively working to derail his candidacy, with efforts underway to pursue legal avenues aimed at blocking his bid.

Matiang’i, who served as a key figure in former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s government, has been at odds with the current administration. Senior officials within Kenya Kwanza believe he misused his authority and mistreated opponents while holding the influential Interior docket. This animosity is expected to fuel efforts to undermine his potential candidacy.

According to People Daily sources, Matiang’i could face up to 14 criminal and misdemeanor charges if he formally announces his bid. Kenya Kwanza operatives are said to be keenly monitoring his next move, prepared to act against him should he proceed with his presidential ambitions.

The idea of Fred Matiang’i’s presidential candidacy was initially floated by Jubilee Party Secretary-General Jeremiah Kioni. However, some political allies—like Kitutu Chache MP Richard Onyonka—have since distanced themselves from the proposal.

Despite the mounting pressure, Matiang’i has remained visible on the political scene, attending public events and maintaining his presence. Still, concerns persist over his past legal issues, including a DCI investigation into a raid at his home. Should he officially announce his candidacy, fresh scrutiny and potential legal challenges could pose serious obstacles to his campaign.
