Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has criticized the Kenyan government's efforts to curb drug and alcohol abuse among the youth, claiming the campaign is doomed due to the alleged involvement of senior state officials in drug trafficking.

Speaking during a church service in Ol Jorook, Nyandarua County, on Sunday, Gachagua alleged that two Cabinet Secretaries appointed by President William Ruto are actively involved in drug trafficking, although he stopped short of naming them.

“When I left government, Ruto appointed two known drug barons into his Cabinet. How can the war against drugs succeed under such circumstances? It cannot. Our young people are now solely under God’s protection,” Gachagua told the congregation.

The former Deputy President, who was impeached in October last year, had previously spearheaded a strong campaign against illicit brews and drugs in Central Kenya. On Sunday, he reiterated that the government had no genuine interest in addressing the issue, even during his tenure.

"Today, Kenya is the only country where drug traffickers are not just free but are sitting in the Cabinet," he added.

Gachagua also lamented the resurgence of illicit alcohol in the region, claiming it is a deliberate move, a concern he had raised earlier.

In addition, he urged the church to be vocal against poor governance, warning that the Executive had compromised Parliament.

"The church is now the only hope for Kenya. If you do not speak out, this country is doomed," he emphasized
