On January 27, President William Samoei Ruto made a major announcement about national identity cards.

The head of state, while speaking at the Data Protection Day event held in Nairobi said that National identity cards will no longer be required to access government services.



"I have ordered the Ministry of ICT to work on a digital Identity, so that the big Huduma thing that never was; we can finally have as Kenya a Digital identity," President Ruto stated.



As the state moves government services to the digital sphere, the Head of State Dr. William Samoei Ruto has announced that the national identity card will be replaced with a digital Huduma Number.


The imminent digital Huduma Namba will allow all Kenyan citizens to be digitally recognized, as the Head of State has indicated that citizens will no longer be obliged to present their national identity cards at government offices.

"By the end of this year, Kenyans must be able to identify themselves digitally. It is not the work of the Government to issue National Identity Cards, it is the work of the Government to identify Kenyans," President Ruto stated.
