More than 16,000 people have now been confirmed dead in Turkey and Syria due to a strong earthquake on Monday, and aid organizations have warned that there is not much time left to find more survivors.

Kenyans have been invited to volunteer and donate to the affected families of the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, which have killed over 7,000 people, Alfred Mutua, the Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs.

CS Mutua urged Kenyans to volunteer and provide material aid to Syria and Turkey in a message to the media.

"I appeal to Kenyans who can work together to provide tangible assistance that will lessen human suffering, like food, clothing, money, and medical supplies, among other things."


Mutua continued, "We will assist Turkey with coffee, tea, groundnuts, and other quickly moving items that can benefit them during this moment.

The CS mentioned that his Ministry is working with other governmental organizations to support ongoing operations and provide material support.

Although none of the 1137 Kenyans registered in Turkey—totalled over 5000—had been reported dead or injured, he also verified that the earthquake had claimed over 5000 lives.

More than 9,500 people and thousands more were injured, and many have no shelter from the cold winter because of the devastating earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria on Monday.
