The claimed police raid on former Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i's home in Karen, Nairobi, has been clarified by Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kithure Kindiki. In a message to newsrooms on Thursday, CS Kindiki refuted assertions made by leaders who spoke about the incident that the anonymous individuals were police officers and said that no police personnel went deployed to Matiang'i's home.
"Lawyers for Dr. Matiangi and a few politicians who talked to the media on the spot said that the individuals in question were police officers dispatched to detain the former Cabinet Secretary. This claim is completely untrue, "Read a portion of the assertion.
The government did not send any police officers or security personnel from any government agency or department to Dr Matiang'i's residence with the intent to detain him, harass him, or in any other way interfere with his constitutional rights.
The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), and the National Police Service (NPS) are aware of the situation. Still, they had yet to receive orders to send officers to Matiang'i's home, according to CS Kindiki.
He stated, "I have verified with the command of the NPS, the EACC, KRA and all law enforcement agencies that none of them has any orders to seek the former Minister.
The Interior CS defended the security agencies, saying they are still "apolitical and committed to resolving Kenya's security concerns."
To help with investigations, he requested anyone with information on the incident to complain about the local police stations.
