A fire in Mwea West sub-county, Kirinyaga County, has damaged property worth over ksh 400000.
A witness said the fire started at around 6 pm on Tuesday and spread rapidly. It took the villagers a while to put out the blaze due to a lack of sufficient water because of the ongoing drought facing the country.
"Our rivers have dried up due to the prolonged dry spell and we had to helplessly look at the fire razing hay," Njeri said. Another witness said that the fire reduced their hay into ashes.
Police officers from the Kiandegwa police post have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire. The firefighter who arrived at the scene at 7;30 said that they arrived late at the location of the fire because they were tackling another fire at Kiangai in Ndia constituency.
