Bola Tinubu was declared presidential elect by the electoral body after getting 8.8 million votes cast. He was followed closely by the leader of the opposition, Atiku Abubakar, who got 6.9 million votes. At the same time, a new candidate in the scene, Peter Obi, came in third after getting 6.1 million votes.

President Buhari took to his Twitter page to congratulate his successor with the caption, "I congratulate His Excellency on his victory. Elected by the people, he is the best person for the job. I shall now work with him and his team to ensure an orderly handover of power."

"I shall now work with him and his team to ensure an orderly handover of power," Buhari added.

However, three opposition parties have disowned the results of the elections alleging that rigging happened and have called for the results to be cancelled." The election is irretrievably compromised, and we have totally lost faith in the entire process," Labour Party chairman Julius Abure told reporters and representatives of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

"We demand that this sham of an election should be immediately cancelled," Abure said. "We also call for a fresh election to be carried out."

President Buhari has called on leaders of the opposition to maintain peace despite their not being satisfied with the results of the election.

"There is no doubt the people's decision has been rendered in the results," he said.

"That is not to say the exercise was without fault. For instance, there were technical problems with the electronic transmission of the results. Of course, there will be areas that need work to bring further transparency and credibility to the voting procedure."

"If any candidate believes they can prove the fraud they claim is committed against them, then bring forward the evidence." president Buhari
