On Sunday, First Lady Rachael Ruto urged Igembe South MP John Paul Mwirigi to find a wife.

The youngest MP in Kenya, Mwirigi, 29, was elected to Parliament in 2017 at just 23. The United Democratic Alliance (UDA), the political party of President William Ruto, supported his reelection last year.

The MP was taunted by Mrs Ruto at a service at St. Thomas Athi Catholic Church in Maua, Meru County when she threatened to send him to the Rift Valley to find him a wife if he couldn't find one in Meru.

"I've heard you're not married, but you might be," I said. Do you have a spouse? I heard the choir singing Kalenjin songs, so if he can't find a Meru girl, I can take him to the Rift Valley and find him a wife," the First Lady added to amusement from the audience.

She recommended that Mwirigi start a family immediately since it is "essential" to do so.

The 54-year-old Mrs Ruto claims that the parliamentarian needs a wife to prepare tea for his supporters when they visit their leader at home.

"Please don't wait too long; family matters are essential. When you're 23, that makes sense, but when you're 29, at least construct a house where your constituents can visit and have someone make them tea, she said.
