Former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga has been chosen by Muslims for Human Rights (Muhuri) to lead its board of directors.
From 2011 until 2016, Mutunga presided as the nation's Chief Justice before quitting early to make room for the selection of his successor.

The Former Chief justice will now succeed long-serving chairperson Khelef Khalifa. Muhuri said in regional newspapers that Mutunga has a solid understanding of the law and human rights.
Mutunga's qualifications, according to Muhuri, will be crucial in achieving its goal of battling impunity.

Muhuri asserts that Mutunga's track record of upholding the law will support Kenyan constitutionalism.
In 2021, Mutunga became a board member of the non-governmental organization with its headquarters in Mombasa.
