Rigathi Gachagua, the deputy president, claims that if Raila had won the 2022 presidential election, he would have been incarcerated.

Speaking in Mathira, Nyeri County, the DP remembered his difficulties leading up to the elections in August 2022 and said his opponents plotted to have him imprisoned.

Gachagua said to a crowd that votes cast in favour of the Kenya Kwanza alliance during the general election in August prevented him from going to jail.

"Without your support, I would not have been elected deputy president. It would have been my sixth month as a prisoner and I would have been cooling my heels and consuming porridge in Kamiti (Prison). I doubt that you would have stopped by," he remarked.

Gachagua was dramatically detained and accused of economic crimes before the election.

He was charged with defrauding Rafiki Micro-Finance Bank of Sh7,330,011,265 through three bank accounts while being aware that the funds were illegal profits.

Noordin Haji, the director of public prosecutions, submitted a request to have the Sh7.3 billion corruption allegations against him dropped three months after taking office.

According to Mr Haji's request under section 87A of the criminal procedure law, the investigations into the incident are still ongoing.

Because he was not given enough time to conduct the investigation, the investigating officer, Obadiah Kuria, informed anti-corruption court magistrate Victor Wakumile that some aspects of the case were not sufficiently covered.

Gachagua was charged with nine other individuals and businesses and freed after posting an Sh12 million cash bail.

The Democratic Party (DP) has repeatedly accused former president Uhuru Kenyatta of planning his political difficulties and believes those accusations are untrue.

Gachagua also charged that the police were unprofessional, particularly in handling his arrest.

Gachagua, incidentally, was Mr Kenyatta's aide before their disagreement.
