Kenya has evacuated 29 Kenyan students stranded in Sudan due to the conflict between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Alfred Mutua, Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, said on Monday that the students had crossed into Ethiopia, from where they would fly to Addis Ababa and then to Nairobi.

"I would like to thank South Sudan, Ethiopia, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia for allowing Kenyan planes intended to evacuate stranded Kenyans in Sudan to fly over their airspaces," Cs Mutua stated.

" I also thank the governments of South Sudan and Ethiopia in particular, for responding to our request and allowing Kenyan citizens to cross their borders and reach safety."

CS Mutua added in the same statement that a Kenya Airforce plane was waiting to evacuate a party of 18 students moving by road to the South Sudan border.

According to CS Mutua, another more extensive group of Kenyans on a well-planned route will be transported by two aircraft from Port Sudan to Jeddah, then by Kenya Airways (KQ) to Nairobi.

"We estimate that 300-400 Kenyans will be transported this way, if not more," Mutua continued.

"I would like to thank and encourage the Kenya Foreign and Diaspora staff in our missions around the world, as well as the multi-agency teams in Nairobi, for the seamless coordination," he said.
