On Friday, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) secured an order that froze unexplained assets worth Kes1.9 billion belonging to former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu, his wife Susan Wangari and family firms.

EACC alleges that the former governor awarded tenders to contractors who later transferred vast amounts of money to him, his spouse Wangari, and their companies as kickbacks.

“Waititu also traded with Kiambu County through companies registered in the names of his spouse and their daughter Monica Njeri Ndungu who upon receipt of payments from Kiambu County transferred money to him,” EACC said.

Waititu was ousted by 63 Kiambu Members of the County Assembly (MCAs), who cited three grounds.

They accused him of corruption, gross misconduct that violated the County Government Act and the Public Finance Management Act, and alleged abuse of office.

In 2019, the EACC was allowed by the High Court to freeze Kes2 billion in unexplained assets acquired by Waititu.

Following the orders, EACC froze 18 prime properties and seven motor vehicles belonging to ex-Governor Waititu, his family members, and companies pending the hearing and determination of his corruption case.

The 18 prime properties include houses in Runda, Lakisama, Migaa Estate, Runda Grove, and parcels of land in Embakasi Ranching, Thindigua, and Kayole.

The seven vehicles being targeted are valued at Kes24.4 million. The agency will also hold money in bank accounts.
