Reuben Kigame, a well-known gospel musician and 2022 presidential candidate, has called on all Kenyans to participate in a solemn national fast on May 10, 2023, to preserve the country from God's vengeance.

Mr Kigame stated on May 8, 2023, that the events in the country, particularly in the church, were grounds for alarm.

"I don't think we realize how far we have fallen as a nation, and especially as the Kenyan Church!" "I don't think we understand what God's wrath looks like against what has happened in our country in the name of God, the Church and the Bible, " Mr Kigame remarked in part.

He said the solemn fast was called so that people might pray during meals. Whenever someone thought about eating, they would think about God and ask Him for forgiveness, which he believes is more vital to the nation than food.

He explained why he was calling for a solemn national fast to avoid past fallen nations' fate.

The initial reason was that innocent individuals had been killed in the name of God, as well as "normalized" blood-shedding, as seen with corpses constantly being dragged from the Yala River, the assassination of election officials to win an election, the Shakahola forest massacre, in which a pastor urged congregants to starve themselves to death to meet Jesus, and pastors who encourage adults to pull kids out of schools and deny them medical care.

"Religious organizations charged with vigilance need to repent for failing God, the Church, the country, the continent, the government, and, particularly, for failing to protect people and their families who invoke the name of the Lord." Government officials controlling broadcasts, social gatherings, and our security should apologize for failing the country," Mr Kigame continued.

The phenomenon of the church being utilized to divide the nation along political lines is his second reason for asking for the fast.
