The National Government has agreed to send equipment and workers to repair the Lake Kanyaboli dam, which ruptured on Sunday, causing severe floods upstream in Siaya and Busia counties.

The action followed an appeal made on Tuesday by Busia Governor Paul Otuoma to the state and other agencies to intervene and avert a potential environmental and humanitarian calamity over the whole Yala Swamp Ecosystem.

Otuoma noted during a Joint Disaster Committee meeting between Busia, Siaya, and Lake Agro Company that the National Government has agreed to dispatch National Youth Service personnel and equipment to reconstruct the dyke through Public Service Cabinet Secretary Aisha Jumwa.

Kipchumba Rutto, an acting county commissioner in Busia, and Robert Ng'etich, a deputy county commissioner in Alego Usonga, guaranteed the affected communities of prompt involvement.

Siaya County Chief of Staff Cyrus Oguna, who represented Governor James Orengo, stated that the joint committee had previously determined areas of intervention that must be implemented to ensure people's lives are restored, and the calamity does not happen again.
