Calvin Okoth, also known as Gaucho and the President of Bunge la Wananchi, was taken into custody on Tuesday, May 23, after voluntarily visiting Nairobi Central Police Station.
As per a statement released by the Azimio la Umoja coalition, Gaucho, a vocal supporter of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, had gone to the station to inquire about the whereabouts of his phone.
Phillip Etale, the Director of Communications for the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), verified that the phone in question had been confiscated during a previous arrest preceding the opposition protests in which Gaucho had participated.
“Calvin Okoth, aka Gaucho, has been arrested by officers from Nairobi Area (county headquarters) at the Central Police Station where he had gone to inquire about his phone, which was confiscated when he was arrested some time back,” read the statement by Etale.

Confirming the arrest, KANU Secretary of Political Affairs Fredrick Okango stated that the station’s police had informed the Azimio la Umoja team of the arrest.
Furthermore, it was mentioned that the legal counsel representing the faction led by Raila Odinga has assumed responsibility for handling the situation.
Doris Kimeli, the Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD) of Central Police Station, explained that there are specific matters that they intended to verify with Gaucho.
“I don’t want to confirm he is under arrest but we have him here for some issues we need to confirm with him,” she said.
Nairobi Police Chief Adamson Bungei has acknowledged that Calvin Okoth, also known as Gaucho, is in custody. However, he mentioned that further details regarding the situation will be provided at a later time.
This development follows allegations that Gaucho made derogatory comments about certain leaders during the Jubilee National Delegates Convention held on Monday at the Ngong Racecourse in Nairobi.
