Senator Ledama Ole Kina of Narok has opposed the proposed 3% housing levy.

The senator expressed concern that the housing project might boost rural-urban migration as Kenyans sought to purchase homes in the metropolis.

"Stop this nonsense of a 3% housing levy, we are a wealthy country with plenty of land," Ole Kina tweeted on Tuesday.

"We must put a stop to this migration from rural to urban and focus on developing our counties."

The charge is part of the proposed Finance Bill 2023, which is presently out for public comment.

Following public engagement, the Bill will be debated in Parliament.

President William Ruto is pushing for the levy, claiming it will create jobs for youngsters and provide cheap housing for the poor.

Despite the government's efforts to dispel myths about the housing charge, Kenyans have reacted negatively to the proposal.
