On Thursday, June 29, the British High Commission in Kenya raised the LGBTQ+ flag, generating a firestorm of discussion on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.

"To commemorate Pride Month, the British High Commission is proudly flying the rainbow flag." We in the United Kingdom understand that when everyone is free to develop and be themselves, we all benefit. "Everyone should be free to love who they want," the High Commission said on its official Twitter account.

The flag was raised to commemorate Pride Month, a month dedicated to celebrating and remembering lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) pride.

Pride Month began with the Stone Wall riots, a series of riots for homosexual rights that took place over many days beginning on June 28, 1969. Brenda Howard, a bisexual activist, founded the pride marches. Kenyans reacted angrily to the Commission's tweet on Twitter. The majority appeared to be opposed to the flag being raised.

Some kenyans were not pleased with the idea of the flag. One user said that We are busy with youth unemployment, health, high taxation and corruption. That is a non-priority issue in Kenya.
