Former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga, along with Boniface Mwangi and a group of activists, found themselves teargassed at the Central Police Station on Saturday, July 8, during the Saba Saba protests. Their objective was to demand the release of the detained activists. The incident caused a disturbance at the police station, leading to one person getting injured.
Activist Mwangi, condemned the action and accused Moses Mutayi OCS Central Police Station of violating their right to picket and demonstrate.
“Police have decided to teargas their workplace and beat some of us. President William Ruto and his deputy Rigathi Gachagua continue to undermine the Constitution,” Mwangi lamented.

No one was protesting @citizentvkenya! We were there to demand the unconditional release of peaceful protesters who are being held illegally at Central Police Station. Also, our Constitution allows the right to protest, anywhere and everywhere. Constitution allows that. Thank you https://t.co/LSue6ArMss

Prior to the incident at the Central Police Station, Willy Mutunga had voiced his criticism towards the current regime, expressing his frustration over the obstacles faced by veteran lawyer John Khaminwa in his efforts to secure bail for the detained protesters.
Joining Mutunga and Boniface Mwangi at the police station were other activists, including Victor Kamau, a Kenya National Commission on Human Rights commissioner, and city lawyer Lempaa Soyinka.
