The Kenya Media Council has criticized incidences of law enforcement officers impersonating journalists to arrest demonstrators in the ongoing antigovernment protests led by Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition.


In the now-viral video, A police officer camouflaged as a civilian standing next to a journalist rushed and arrested a demonstrator before whisking him away in a police car.

MCK CEO David Omwoyo Omwoyo emphasized the incidents filmed in a viral video in Kibra in a statement on Wednesday, saying the action endangers journalists in their line of work.

Omwoyo said that The Kenya Media Council has noted with deep concern cases of security forces masquerading as journalists covering protests intending to arrest protestors.

He added that the Impersonation of journalists by police is a grave unprofessional misconduct on the part of the police, and trials endanger the lives of journalists in the line of duty.

Omwoyo chastised security forces for arresting and describing press members, stating that this was a breach of the law.
