Japhet Koome, the Inspector General of Police, has accused prominent politicians of hiring dead bodies from morgues and portraying them as victims of police abuse.

In a media address on Tuesday, Koome claimed that the leaders plot with mortuary staff to photograph the dead and then post them on social media platforms to tarnish the police force's image.

"The information I have is that they (politicians) go to some of the mortuaries and compromise some of the workers there," the inspector general added.

"People who died due to an illness, an accident, or other causes, they (politicians) photograph such bodies and blame it on the police." But we're not in the business of responding to politicians all the time."

The IG insisted that the police carry out their constitutional obligation of maintaining law and order. The police have recently been accused of employing excessive force during anti-government demonstrations.

"Ours is to carry out our mandate, which is to maintain law and order and protect life and property, whereas politicians only know how to talk and spread propaganda," IG Koome explained.

Azimio la Umoja coalition leader Raila Odinga has refuted claims by IG koome, saying that his sentiments were disappointing, adding that they will do everything it takes to ensure the victims of police brutality during the anti-government protest get justice.
