The family of an 18-year-old student is still in shock after the death of their kin just days after she was admitted to Daystar University.

Bowen Kanda and his family say their daughter, Mercy Cherono, died only four days after enrolling at Daystar University to study nursing.

Kanda claims that on the fateful day, his daughter called her mother and said she would be home that evening since there was a first-year party at the school that she did not want to attend.

Cherono, 18, called her mother moments later to say she had opted to stay and join the party because she couldn't find transport home.

Kanda said he received the phone call that every parent dreads at 2 a.m.; the school requested the parents to travel to the institution immediately and afterward referred them to Shalom Hospital in Kitengela, where their worst fears were verified - their precious daughter was no longer alive.

"The hostel where she was discovered was not the one I paid for. I had paid for a separate hostel, and she died in another, and this hostel does not even have CCTV cameras that could have followed my child's movements."

Daystar University performed a requiem liturgy for the deceased student on Thursday at its Nairobi campus but declined to comment on her death.

The family is now questioning the circumstances surrounding their daughter's death, which occurred only a week after she was admitted.

The late Cherono's post-mortem study proved inconclusive, leaving the family with more questions than answers.
